This guide is for returning players who have already logged in and settled. The base client setup is complete. Everything here is optional — install none, some, or all of it. Each piece stands alone. None of it touches the server, and none of it can break your installation if done in order.
The Foundation — Do This First
01
Unlock the Memory Ceiling
Required Before Any HD Textures

The stock client was built for a different era. Give it room to breathe.

The 3.3.5a client is a 32-bit executable that caps at 2GB of RAM. Once you start loading high-resolution textures, it will hit that ceiling and crash. The Large Address Aware patch removes that limit, allowing the client to use up to 4GB. This takes thirty seconds and must be done before installing anything else in this guide.

Download Large Address Aware from the link below and extract it anywhere
Open the tool — it shows a file picker
Navigate to your WoW folder and select your patched exe — WoW_RCE_fix.exe or WoW_tweaked.exe
Tick the box labelled Large Address Aware and click Save
Done — your exe now has a 4GB ceiling instead of 2GB
Download Large Address Aware ↗
Note: If you used the camera fix and have WoW_tweaked.exe, apply this patch to that file. If you skipped the camera fix, apply it to WoW_RCE_fix.exe. Whichever exe you launch the game from — that's the one to patch.
Textures & Models — The World Itself
02
Bhop's WotLK Remaster
AI Upscaled · Original Models Preserved

Every texture in the world, sharpened. Every model you remember, untouched.

This pack upscales all cloth and armour textures, world terrain, NPC textures, and trees to 2× resolution using AI. Spell visuals are updated to use effects from later expansions. Fog is pushed back so you can see across zones. Cataclysm water is included. Blood effects are enhanced. The original WotLK character and creature models are kept exactly as they were — no WoD or Legion replacements.

Before you copy anything: open the extracted Data folder and delete Patch-A.MPQ from it. The pack ships one for its login screen, but you already have one from the ARAC setup and it must not be overwritten. Delete it from the extracted folder now, before touching your WoW installation.
Download the pack from the link below (~5 GB)
Extract the rar — you will see a Data folder and an Interface folder
Open the extracted Data folder and delete Patch-A.MPQ before doing anything else
Drag the remaining contents of the extracted Data folder into your WoW Data folder — if Windows asks what to do with duplicate files, choose Replace the files in the destination
Drag the contents of the extracted Interface folder into your WoW Interface folder — these are all new files, nothing will be replaced
Download Bhop's Remaster ↗
Note on Patch-D.MPQ: This patch replaces in-game music with Cataclysm zone music. If you want to keep the original WotLK soundtrack, delete Patch-D.MPQ from your WoW Data folder after copying.
03
Creatures & Mounts HD 2025
Retroported · Art-Style Faithful

The beasts of Azeroth, given the detail they always deserved.

A dedicated creature and mount upgrade built with one rule: stay true to the original WotLK art style. No models imported wholesale from later expansions. Every creature and mount has been individually retroported, repaired, and retextured where needed. Works alongside Bhop's pack without conflict — they cover different things.

Download from the link below and extract — you will have a single Patch-Z.MPQ file (~4 GB)
Drop Patch-Z.MPQ into your WoW Data folder
Windows will ask if you want to replace the existing Patch-Z.MPQ — choose Replace the file in the destination. Bhop's version is a small 319KB patch; this one is the full HD creature and mount pack and supersedes it
No other steps — the client loads it automatically

The Water
04
Cataclysm HD Water
Included in Bhop's Pack

The lakes and seas of Azeroth, made to move and breathe again.

The original WotLK water is flat, nearly opaque, and dead. This retroports Cataclysm's procedural water rendering to the 3.3.5a client — reflective, animated, and alive. The difference is immediate the moment you stand at any shoreline. This is already included in Bhop's pack above as patch-enUS-W.MPQ inside your Data/enUS/ folder.

If you installed Bhop's pack: you already have this. Nothing extra to do.
The Interface
05
HD Spell & Item Icons
Included in Bhop's Pack · Lowest Risk Change

Every ability on your bars, sharpened to twice the resolution.

Retail WoW progressively upscaled all spell and item icons to 2× resolution over the years. Those icons drop directly into the 3.3.5a client and work without any MPQ changes — they live in Interface/Icons/ and are invisible to the server. Already included in Bhop's pack via the Interface folder. If you want to remove them and go back to the originals, simply delete the Interface/Icons/ folder contents.

If you installed Bhop's pack: you already have this. The icons were placed when you merged the Interface folder.
Post-Processing — Light & Colour
06
ReShade — Classic WoW HD Clarity
Post-Processing · Toggle With Home Key

Colour, contrast, and clarity — the world made vivid without changing what it is.

ReShade is a post-processing injector that sits between the game's rendered output and your screen. The HD Clarity preset adds sharpening, colour vibrancy, and lighting refinement without the heavy shadow effects that cost FPS. The result feels like turning on HDR for the first time — nothing in the world changes, it just becomes more present. Toggle on and off with the Home key at any time.

Download the HD Clarity preset from the link below and extract it — you will have a single Classic Wow HD Clarity Reshade.ini file
Download ReShade from reshade.me ↗ — scroll to the bottom and click Download ReShade X.X.X with full add-on support
Run the ReShade installer — click Browse, navigate to your WoW folder, and select WoW_RCE_fix.exe
On the API screen, select DirectX 9 and click Next
On the effects screen, tick all packages and click Next
On the add-ons screen, leave everything unticked and click Finish
Place Classic Wow HD Clarity Reshade.ini directly in your WoW folder — same folder as your exe
Launch the game — ReShade will compile shaders on the login screen, wait for it to finish
Press Home to open the ReShade overlay — click the preset dropdown at the top and select Classic Wow HD Clarity Reshade.ini
Close the overlay with Home and enjoy — toggle off and on at any time with the same key
Download HD Clarity Preset ↗ Download ReShade ↗
Do not install the D3D9-to-Vulkan conversion that some guides mention alongside ReShade — it causes crashes and is not needed here.

None of this changes what Azeroth is. It only changes how clearly you can see it. The roads are still there. The fire is still lit. It always was.
